Going Home

Joel Hoffman and Roger Hall were very slick. Ray had a sick, terrible feeling as he grabbed his guitar and led the way out of the studio. Pacific Records had decided to play hardball, and he was a dumb kid who didn't know the rules of the game.

When Nancy and George walked into the living room, Jake, Will, Carson Drew and Avery seemed to be deep in conversation. Nancy noticed Jake's eyebrows lift in appreciation as he took in her new dress. When he looks at me it always makes my heart flip-flop, she thought, smiling at him.

Then Nancy caught Avery's eye. She hadn't seen Avery since breakfast. Avery's smile was tentative; her usually open expression seemed wary, cautious.

Nancy managed a weak smile back. She suddenly felt awfully silly about her blowup that morning. As she settled down next to Jake on the sofa, she resolved to be extra nice to Avery from then on.

"Nancy, Jake's been telling us about the counterfeit tapes," Carson Drew said.

"What counterfeit tapes?" George asked.

Nancy explained quickly and was surprised when Will and George exchanged a quick glance. "You knew about them?" Nancy asked Will.

"No. Not until now, but yesterday we ran into Kate Terrell and Jeff Rayburn at Keelor Falls."

George jumped in. "I mentioned the mix-up
